Prostate Cancer

The health care needs of men change with aging, and a comprehensive screening planned for prostate cancer is important.  The optimal time to start screening for prostate cancer differs amongst different populations.  Screening for prostate cancer involved shared decision making between you and your physician, and may vary depending on your family history.  This screening generally involves a digital rectal exam to detect asymmetries of the prostate accompanied by PSA blood testing, the combination of which can detect the majority of early prostate cancers.

Colon Cancer

Colon cancer screening is very important and generally begins at age 45 with yearly rectal exams.  Colonoscopy screening generally begins at age 50, depending on any family history of colorectal cancer.  Colon cancer screening is very important, precancerous polyps can often be detected with colonoscopy and removed, thus decreasing her chance of developing colon cancer in the future.  Colon cancer screening saves lives.

Testicular Cancer

Testicular cancer has the highest incidence between the ages of 15 and 30, so self testicular exams are very important for patients in this age range.  A self testicular exam simply involves palpation of your testicles for any bumps or abnormalities.  If any are detected you should report this to your physician immediately for a full workup.  A physician can teach you how to perform these exams if you are not sure.
